Keep awake therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour.

"Woke" is a slang term being used these days. It is being used in situations like in the movie The Matrix where the protagonist in the story is offered the red pill to wake up into the world as it really exists. In particular, it can be that you have a sudden understanding of what is really going on and you realize you have been wrong. I am becoming more convinced that most of us sleep-walk through a big chunk of our lives. Perhaps we do it intentionally because we do get a glimpse of just one piece of what is really going on and we just don't want to see it anymore. This verse is the last line of a parable about preparing enough fuel to keep a lamp burning in order to see salvation when it comes. I wonder sometimes whether we move through our lives more like planets and asteroids which coolly and dispassionately whizz passed each other at the speed of death. Sometimes they collide and that is all. To choose to keep awake and do all the work necessary to stay "woke" is often painful, but completely necessary. It is when we are awake, we are most aware of a hand on a shoulder, the color of a person's eye, the muscles in your face you use for laughter that can feel like a shooting star. Keep awake therefore. The Savior is near.

Give us the courage, O Lord, to stand awake in your presence. Amen.
