As you therefore have received Christ Jesus the Lord, continue to live your lives in him, rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving. See to it that no one takes you captive through philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the universe, and not according to Christ.

As young person, I was told by a highly influential person in my life that as I move into adulthood I should make contacts not friends. Though I was smart enough to discern the value of knowing people who could be helpful, I was also growing in what it meant to value people for who they are and not what they could do for me. It was one of the first time in my young adult life that I had to choose between the opinion of someone I valued and my freshly developing core of beliefs. We never stop being affected by those who want to influence us and, at the same time, we have the power to influence others. It is actually quite easy to lose one's footing. We look to Jesus to teach us, to provide fertile ground for us to grow in truth. Jesus seeks not to wash our brains or hold us captive but to be in free and compassionate relationship with us.

Holy God, forgive our deceit and bless our lives rooted in you. Amen.
